Since opening in September 2013, the Knightdale Station Park Playground has been a beloved space for families, friends, and the community to gather, play, and create memories. Over the years, the wooden structures have provided endless fun, but they have now reached the end of their usable lifespan.

While our dedicated Knightdale staff have worked diligently to maintain safety, it’s time to renovate and reimagine the playground for future generations. This renovation will ensure a modern, safe, and exciting play space that continues to serve as a central hub for our community.

We understand the timing isn't ideal, and we would have loved to schedule the installation during a period of lower usage. However, playground equipment of this size and type takes months to be built, and the delivery timeline was not flexible.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to enjoy the playgrounds at Harper Park and Mingo Creek Park while we work on upgrading the Knightdale Station Park playground.

The transformation is really coming to life!

Last week, the new front fencing was installed. Crews are hard at work installing pour-in-place surfacing and mulch, which will provide a soft, safe foundation for play.

One of the most noticeable changes is the completion of our new shade structures, offering much-needed relief from the sun for both children and families. Additionally, four beautiful new trees have been planted to provide greenery and natural shade for years to come.

Looking ahead, touches like sod, benches, trash cans, and water fountains are scheduled to be added in the coming weeks bringing function and comfort to every corner of the playground.

Due to shipping delays, a final shade element over the train structure will be installed later this fall. We appreciate your patience as we work to make this space as fun, functional, and inclusive as possible.

The playground is being transformed with a vibrant theme inspired by our town’s signature color scheme, featuring bold and energetic shades of orange that celebrate our community spirit. As we continue building an inclusive space for all children and families, new accessibility features have been added with thoughtful intention.

One major highlight is the Sway Fun® glider, the first wheelchair-accessible glider in our town that fully meets all current safety standards. This innovative piece of equipment allows children of all abilities to play together, making inclusive fun a reality.

We’ve also incorporated the color orange as an accessibility enhancement for visually impaired individuals, ensuring that this new space is welcoming and usable for everyone in our community.

Construction crews have successfully poured new concrete walkways around the site, providing smoother, safer access for strollers, wheelchairs, and all visitors.

Looking ahead, mulch, artificial turf, and poured-in-place (PIP) surfacing are scheduled to be installed over the next few weeks. These elements will further enhance safety, comfort, and the overall aesthetic of the playground.

Last week brought some noticeable additions and improvements that are sure to enhance both the safety and comfort of the space.

    • Shade structures were installed throughout the playground, providing much-needed protection from the sun as warmer days approach
    • A fully shaded swing set is now in place—perfect for families looking to enjoy playtime with a little extra comfort.
    • Wire fencing has been added around the play area to improve safety and keep the space secure.

We’re also excited about the new silo and barn play features. While they may look like traditional metal structures, they’re actually made from durable composite plastic. It is a safer, kid-friendly material designed to withstand years of use and all types of weather.
